Question:
Is periodontal disease contagious? Is this disease (like severe gingivitis (red and bleeding gums) contagious?
Can it be passed from one human being to another by kissing? ...Visitor from CO
Answer:
Although it's thought that oral bacteria is first passed onto babies by parental kissing (who doesn't kiss their babies?), the type of adult periodontal disease you are asking about does not.
By the time we are teens and adults the bacteria that causes Periodontal (gum) Disease and bone
loss is present in great numbers. Dental plaque and bacteria form on your teeth each day. The only way to be assured that you are keeping the dental periodontal bacteria levels to healthy level (pink, tight, healthy, non-bleeding gums) is to thoroughly brush and Floss at least one good time a
day.
Brushing alone will not prevent Periodontal Disease and bone loss. No amount of sugar-free
gum, mouthwashes or electric powered toothbrushes will by themselves prevent bone loss. It's more beneficial to put aside 10 minutes a day to brush and properly floss ONE time a day than to just brush 4-8 times a day!
