Question:
Gum recession / grafting: I am considering getting a surgery to treat my recessed gum.
Is it better to use the patient's own tissue or use a graft? Is there any difference in terms of time of recovery or some rejection of the graft? ... Visitor from FL
Answer:
If you are having tissue grafting, as in gum tissue, it is usually done with the patient's own tissue.
The tissue can be taken from the palate (roof of mouth) or a laterally repositioned graft from the adjacent gum tissue.
If bone is being used, the best bone is always an autogenous graft taken from the patient. However, we frequently use an allograft, which is demineralized freeze dried cadaver bone that is screened and has been treated. Hope this has helped.
