Gummy Smile Ask The Orthodontist James Awbrey

Question:
Gums increasing not receding: I got braces about 8 months ago and have noticed that my gums are growing up around the braces.

I am wondering what this means and how to help it. ...Visitor from UT

Answer:
Gingival hyperplasia, the overgrowth of gum tissue, often occurs when gingival areas are prone to bacteria accumulation. Wearing braces can make routine brushing and flossing a little more difficult for some patients.

You need to really concentrate on brushing and flossing, paying particular attention to your gums.

You may have a slight nickel sensitivity to the braces themselves. Don't be alarmed, you will survive, however you must keep your gums healthy through proper brushing and flossing.
