Video: Laser Gummy Smile Treatment
Question:
Braces cause gummy smile I am in 2nd month of my braces now. And I have noticed I have a gummy smile, which I didn't have prior to wearing braces.
I wear braces to correct my slightly protruding upper front teeth. I'm not sure if this is just the phase I am going through or its going to be permanent at the end of my braces treatment.
Do you think this could happen? ...Visitor from Singapore
Answer:
You may have what is called "gingival hyperplasia", which is commonly caused by bacteria building up in areas on your teeth and gums that you cannot reach with a tooth brush.
Hyperplasia can be caused by other events however.
You might consider trying out an irrigation type device like a Water Pik or other brand of appliance.
Many orthodontists recommend them for maintaining good oral health conditions, which becomes very difficult when wearing braces.
