Question:
I have swollen gums right behind my front top teeth. The are looks white and bleeds easy. I am 5 months pregnant and dont know if its sensitive gums or someone said it could be an abcess since i never had one i dont even know what that is.
Answer:
You probably have pregnancy gingivitis - periodontitis. When you are pregnant and your hormones change your gums become very susceptible to infections. You should see a dentist to check the area and remove any plaque or tartar that is present.
It will be best to take an x-ray to determine the cause of the abscess. Xrays are considered safe after the first trimester of pregnancy.
It may also be an abscess due to a cavity that has reached the nerve of the tooth. In that case you may need a root canal. Don't cringe, most dentists are able to provide that valuable service with very little discomfort.
