Question:
My dentist recently informed me that my gumline is beginning to recede. What can I use/take/do to prevent this from continuing?
Additionally, what can I use/take/do to stop the pain that I have especially when brushing my teeth? I already use an electric tooth brush. ...Visitor from CT
Answer:
Of course I can not see you to tell you exactly what is happening but a
general answer is as follows:
Gumline recession can be caused by a couple of things. We use to think
that it was caused by over brushing or brushing too hard. This could be
true but we now know that recession can be caused by teeth that are
coming together too hard.
This means that your bite could be "off" in the areas where the recession is happening. The recession exposes part of the tooth that is sensitive to
temperature. It is possible to cover those areas with a bonding material that will protect your teeth.
The choices are a material called SE Bond or One Up Bond and these are applied by your dentist. The electric brush is a good idea and this will usually prevent more mechanical removal of the gum tissue. Hope this helps.
