Question:
Immediate Denture Creates Horse Looks: I had all my teeth extracted with the understanding that I would have new teeth the same day. Well, I did, but I looked like a horse!
The dentist re-made the teeth moving the upper and lower teeth up higher to compensate for my "gummy smile." Now I can't see my top teeth but can see the whole bottom?
Can this be corrected or have I gone to the wrong dentist? Now I look like a bulldog! Thanks for your advice... I need it! ... Visitor from OR
Answer:
The difficulty of immediate dentures is evident from your story.
Sometimes it is difficult to change excess bone, prominent teeth, uneven smile display all without the ability to try the dentures in.
So, immediate dentures are considered provisional or TRIAL dentures (in my practice) while people and dentists learn about how to give someone an ideal smile.
Your dissatisfaction is unfortunate and your dentist should be able to correct your issues with this second set of dentures or be able to explain why you are now in this situation and what they can do to rectify it.
Oftentimes people with excess bone have difficulty with denture esthetics as the acrylic must cover the bone and can give a bulging lip appearance, bulge under the nose or bull dog type look.
The dentist should have discussed implants to recreate a natural smile as an option before the extractions were accomplished or they could have discussed removal of excess bone to facilitate ideal facial esthetics with the dentures before treatment began.
If your dentist can't satisfy you at this point, you should get a second opinion. I do wish you luck.
