Question:
Immediate Denture forces diet change: Since I began to wear immediate dentures a little over 2 years ago, I have found that my taste buds seem to have changed.
There are some foods and drinks that have no flavor since arriving in Denture Town! Am I crazy? I haven't been able to find anything on the internet that substantiates this problem. ... Visitor from TX
Answer:
There are taste buds in the palate that is covered by the denture.
Another problem that denture wearers have is lack of ability to feel the texture of food, which can also affect you feelings of taste.
There are solutions, but they are expensive and none are guaranteed to work, since there could be other factors contributing to your altered taste sensations.
The ideal solution is to have implants placed and have a denture made with a metal substructure that is a rim of teeth that do not cover the palate. Cost is probably in the $20,000 range for an upper denture and implants.
The dentists who do this kind of work will usually provide financing to make it affordable. You could also look into mini-dental implants that would be covered with a rim of crowns and bridges and also not cover the palate.
