Question:
Tooth replacement: I have a question about tooth replacement, I saw a program on TV
where the dentist was able to remove the tooth and surgically insert a metal plug for the replacement tooth.
I have so many teeth, mostly molars that need to be replaced, and am looking for a permanent fix. I don't know much about my options for repairing my teeth and am not sure how to locate a dentist in my area that can help me. ...Visitor from FL
Answer:
The procedure you saw on TV was an immediate load implant placement.
That is a procedure in which a tooth or teeth are removed and implants are surgically placed and then the teeth are immediately attachded to the implants.
To perform such a procedure, certain criteria must be met:
- First, there must be enough bone to stabilize the implant
- Second, the implant must be secure enough to withstand at least 35ncm of force in order to attach teeth or place a load on the implant.
When these criteria cannot be met, for whatever reason, dental implants are utilized wherein the patient waits until the bone grows around the implant (osseointegration) for more stability which typically requires 3-6 months depending upon unique characteristics of the patient's bone structure.
