Question:
Abscessed Molar Extraction with Immediate Implant: Is it possible to extract a molar while it is abscessed and then have an immediate implant installed?
Should zirconium be used for the implant itself? ...Visitor from AZ
Answer:
If the abscess can be removed, antibiotics can be placed topically. Then the implant can be placed.
The success rate is not as high as a non infected site. Loma Linda University Department of Implantology did a study on this subject and developed the protocol.
There are many additional factors in immediate placement and immediate load:
- There needs to be adequate volume and quality (density) of bone to be able to place immediately place the implant
- Immediate load requires initial stability which is usually measured by the amount of torque which can be applied
- Additional factors such as systemic problems, smoking, and grinding can play a role in the ability to immediately load an implant
The vast majority of the implants placed are manufactured with titanium. There are some alternative materials. I would suggest that you stick to proven technology.
