Question:
I went to the dentist in November to have my teeth cleaned. During the cleaning the dentist found a tooth that needed to be filled and that's where my problems started. I have been in pain ever since.
I went to my Medical doctor after a month of being in pain and was told I had infection. They gave me an antibiotic. Now it's back again - the same tooth with a bump on the side and I am in pain. It's been 3 months, I don't know what to do.
I am scared to go to the dentist now. This dentist that I was using ... I have been in his office at least 4 times in one month. Please give me some advice on what to do next. ...Visitor from NJ
Answer:
I'm sorry to hear that you've been uncomfortable for so long. The fact that you state there's a bump on your gum near the tooth that hurts usually indicates that an infection is present. Most likely the root canal is infected and root canal treatment is necessary.
That's usually easy to diagnose and treat. If your current dentist can't resolve your problem then I think you should seek a second opinion. Medical doctors are not often that helpful and rarely understand dental problems. Antibiotics in dentistry are rarely a final solution; we must zero in on the cause and treat it.
