Question:
Infections: Im a 20 year old male with severe pain in a specific tooth.
I had a root canal in it about 3 years ago and there was an infection in the tooth. The dentist who worked on it had been my dentist since I was a little kid.
I had never really had any dental problems prior to this, but now I am in constant pain. He worked on it up until a few months ago. I've been prescribed antibiotics and he has reopened the canals to drain them a few times.
I stopped going to him for a few reasons. Two weeks ago that tooth cracked and its completely exposed. And for a few months I have been having to drain the swollen gum around the tooth and puss comes out. Is this very serious? ...Visitor from PA
Answer:
It sounds like your childhood dentist tried to treat this tooth and did his best. However some root canals that are difficult or hard to treat should be cared for by an Endodontist (a root canal specialist).
A chronic infection in a tooth is a serious matter and I would advise you to call an Endodontist to evaluate this tooth. Sometimes reinfected teeth with past failing root canal treatment might not be able to be saved.
