Question:
I have been advised that #9 is committing suicide and dying from the inside out. I have perfectly white teeth and no gum/tooth discoloration. (Every dentist comments on how beautiful my teeth are). I felt a numbness for a month or so and avidly pursued my dentist until finally, after 3 visits, she humored me and did an xray.
I was told I am now in danger of loosing my tooth. I have had 3 injections of calcium hydroxide and have once again developed an abcess. I don't want to spend money foolishly. If the odds of me keeping this tooth are not good, I would like to pull it and get an immediate implant. To me it is almost the analogy of patching up a tire - just waiting for it to blow.
What are your thoughts? PS I am in a very high profile position and count on my looks to earn my living. ...Diane
Answer:
Diana, we appreciate your inquiry and the concern that you have. Without an xray it would be difficult to determine to what extent the internal resorption has reached.
Generally, a tooth that is undergoing internal resorption can be remedied by thoroughly debriding the inside of the tooth and placing calcium hydroxide. I have to assume that the debridement was done correctly and that the calcium hydroxide was placed deep enough into the root canal to have a therapeutic effect. If it was, then you are receiving proper treatment.
If the tooth has extensive resorption an implant would be an excellent choice. However, the tooth would have to be atraumatically extracted without destroying any bone. Perhaps getting a second opinion from another dentist or endodontist would be in order. Hope I have helped.
