Question:
Effectiveness of Invisalign: I am 45 years old. I have a severe overbite.
My lower front teeth actually touch well into the gums behind my front teeth as the lower teeth have continued to erupt giving my lower jaw a kind of upward hook. I'm wearing Invisalign now to straighten my lower teeth but have not noticed much improvement in the height of my front lower teeth.
In fact, when I close my back teeth, there is more of a "bite" into my soft tissue than there was before. Should I expect this problem to get worse and to be variable during the course of my Invisalign treatment or do I have a situation that I need to be more concerned about? ...Visitor from VA
Answer:
Invisalign is a product that can have excellent results when used judiciously, and poor results when good judgement is abandoned. As I have not seen your case myself, it is difficult to judge whether good judgement has been exercised.
IF your doctor is an orthodontist, you are probably going to do just fine with Invisalign. IF your doctor is not an orthoodntist, you may find that your treatment will not go so well.
While general dentists can get certified in Invisalign, the extent of their training is limited to a weekend course. Orthodontist's spend years learning how to move teeth.
General dentists can and SHOULD do invisalign for very very simple cases. But the image in my mind of your case suggests to me that you should either be Invisaligning with an Orthodontist, or maybe you should be in braces because of the limitations of invisalign.
Conclusion: Invisalign is a great product when the limitations of the product are recognized. When these limitations are ignored....everyone involved is disappointed.
