Question:
My son is ten years old. Recently we visited a dentist and he found out that his upper jaw is not growing, such that his lower jaw overlaps the top, which is opposite of what should be.

What stops jaw growth? Can it be rectified? What are the side effects if this is not rectified? .... Visitor from Kenya

Answer:
The odd growth event is a developmental issue or a genetically based issue.

Consult an oral surgeon and orthodontist, as a team, to discuss the choices for treatment that can normalize the size disparities. Orthognathic surgery combined with orthodontics are the usual treatments.

A major concern will be deciding when it should be done ... since future growth spurts can be expected to occur up until the age of 17-21 years of age.

In some rare cases, patients who have had orthognathic surgery too early required retreatment later, in their adult years.
