Question:
TMJ jaw clicking and locking: I have had bad TMJ on both sides for over 3 years. Both sides
dislocate and lock about 6-10x a week but it is constantly dislocating. I have been to more then 6 oral surgeons, orthodontists and doctors. I have had several bite plates been put on special diets, tried exercises.
I was told surgery is the next step but have heard that wiring your jaw shut for several weeks can heal it just by immobilizing it. I would prfer to take this step first but my doctor refuses and says surgery is the next step. People I know have had this work for them and I would prefer to try all methods before surgery. What should I do? ... Visitor from NY
Answer:
A dislocation of the TM Joint is when the condyle (the head or top of the lower jaws that connects to the upper jaw near the ear) moves past the articular eminence (a small bump at the base of the fossa). This by itself is not a problem unless it is causing pain or you are getting stuck open often.
What is happening is that the muscle are tightening up and not allowing the condlye to move back into the fossa of the joint. A bit plate will only help by relaxing the muscle but will not stop any dislocation. Diet will also not help dislocation.
Limiting the open is the best way of stopping the dislocation. also muscle relaxants may help the getting stuck problem but not the dislocation.
