Question:
Jaw clicking + underbite = TMJ? I was born with an underbite, and had that corrected when I was a little kid.
I am now 26 years old and since I was a little kid my jaw although it was fixed, doesn't line up, clicks and goes crooked when I open it. I have now noticed in photographs over the past few years that my smile is very crooked as well. Every time I eat the first few bites, it causes a sharp pain to shoot through my jawline.
Does this sound like TMJ? I would like to have my jaw broken and realigned but I don't know if that is possible ... Visitor from MA
Answer:
Your problem is not that uncommon. So you have bite with a shift in conjunction with jaw pain and an attendant crooked smile. Your problem can likely be handled in a variety of ways, though the Right Way needs to be identified in order to create an ideal result.
Can your jaw be broken (aka "reset")? Certainly.....if that is the Right Way. See a board certified orthodontist that is trained in TMJ pain as well as Orthognathic Surgery/ Dentofacial Orthopedics.....AND DOES A NUMBER OF SIMILAR CASES EVERY YEAR.
While some orthodontists dabble in these things, I suggest that you consult with an orthodontist that has a proven record of achievement in these types of treatments.
