Question:
Jaw Pain after molar treatment: About 2 months ago I had a one piece crown put over the 2 back molars. One molar had a root canal done 2 years. ago.
After the first phase of the crown my teeth ached and also my lower jaw. The dentist told me that it would go away when the permanent crown was sealed. It didn't.
Now I am seeing another dentist, (endodontist) and he has just completed the first phase of a root canal on one. The toothache and sensitivity has almost gone but the jaw pain continues.
What could be causing this pain and can I expect it to eventually go away? Are my back molars supposed to meet with the top molars to have a good bite? It seems that now the only teeth that meet are the eye and front teeth. ...Visitor from PA
Answer:
My guess is that your Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ's) are sore due to your bite being off.
All of your teeth, front and back, are supposed to meet and function in harmony. A normal bite is comfortable, the teeth hit normally, and the jaws stay pain-free.
If you feel that only your front and canine (eye) teeth are hitting, then there is a problem.
As I cannot examine you over the Internet, I recommend asking your endodontist for a referral to a dentist in your area who understands occlusion. (how the bite works). Specialists like your Endodontist usually know the better dentists in the area.
