Question:
Jaw pain: 6 months ago I had a back tooth pulled. I don't numb easily and needed several novacaine injections.
The pain afterward for the next 2-3 weeks was intense. Since then it has subsided to a dull ache. My Jaw is always sore and I have developed a "clicking and grinding sound" when I chew or talk for long periods.
I had my regular DDS xray the area and he found nothing. Both the Periodontist and the DDS have said it's a nerve issue from the injections and may take up to a year to go away.
I'm not sure if I need to go to an MD or resort to accupuncture? I worry there may be an infection as the area seems "hot" sometimes but there is very litle swelling. ...Visitor from WA
Answer:
This could be a nerve issue, but it sounds more like a TMJ (temprormandibular joint) and muscle problem. It also could be an infection.
Whatever the reason, somebody needs to explore it and come up with a game plan.
I would advise seeing an oral surgeon who was not involved in the treatment to get another opinion.
If it is a nerve problem, you may need to see if you need surgical intervention. If it is TMJ, you may need a night guard.
