Question:
Swelling - Tetanus Shot: In the past 3 days my jaw started hurting and it has gotten worse.
It is hard to open and there is swelling now on both sides of my jaw. I have had a Tetanus shot within the last 5 years, but I am getting worried because the pain and swelling is getting worse.
Also I don't know of any injures suffered in the past week or two. What is happening? ...Visitor from AL
Answer:
I am not sure what the problem is specifically but I would suggest that you consider using some ice on the side of your face and using some Motrin to see if that helps initially.
I do believe that if that does not help within the next 24 hours that you need to see your dentist. If your dentist is not comfortable treating joint and muscle pain then ask for a referral to someone who has substantial experience in treating tmj and jaw pain disorders.
One reason that I would suggest that you see your dentist first is that last week we had a patient come in who thought they were having a TMJ problem and they were actually having a problem with an abscessed tooth.
