Question:
Quick Fix for Lockjaw-like Pain? I have been having this problem with my jaw, and its driving me crazy. Sometimes I'll open my mouth and my jaw won't lock, but it will continue to hurt for a little while. When I try to open my mouth wide again,
it won't open entirely. I'm in a lot of pain. Whats going on here? I can still talk and open my mouth and
everything -- it just hurts really bad. Is there any way to quick fix this problem? ....Visitor from CA
Answer:
First Possibility: - Your jaw has a pad that fits between your skull and the joint of your lower jaw. This pad is connected to ligaments that move the pad as you move your jaw. It is a coordinated effort... as you move your jaw this pad moves too. However, the pad may now be displaced and when you try to open your jaw, the pad stops your jaw movement. This jaw stopping or opening issue may be caused by clenching and grinding.
Second Possibility: - The same problem could have been caused by an accident or some kind of fall or trauma to the jaw area.
Third Possibility: - There could be some sort of degenerative medical conditionn contributing to your
jaw problem. There are ways to manage TMJ (tempromandibular joint) malfunctions and you need to
go to a dentist that is comfortable treating TMD (tempromandibular disfunction). Generally this
condition is managed but not cured.
My recommendations are a soft diet, no gum or unnecessary chewing. See your dentist ASAP.
