Question:
Jaw Trauma and Lock Jaw: I got in a scuffle with a friend 5 or 6 years ago and took a blow to the left jaw. Ever since then, I have had difficulty opening my mouth straight open.
I am able to get my mouth open all the way if I move my jaw to the right, but I can't open it straight, and certainly not to the left. I have no trouble closing it, but when I open, I feel a very pronounced pressure right where the jaw meets the skull.
What could be wrong, and what can I do about it? If I can't do anything about it, who could? ...Visitor from GA
Answer:
You are in what we refer to as close lock.
The disc has been pushed forward over the condyle of the lower jaw, which is preventing you from opening on the left. In your situation the disc may not recapture itself on top of the condyle because it may be attached to the bone if it was severely injured.
My advice is to see an Oral Maxillo-Facial surgeon and let him try to recapture the disc manually. They will put you to sleep for this procedure. If this is unsuccessful they will recommend going in surgically to move the disc back into place.
