Question:
Jaw Problems: I am 31 and my jaw has always popped when I chew.
In the last year it has begun locking and is getting worse, even when I yawn. It will lock open / shut and it is painful to get open / closed. The right side pushes out by my ear with movement.
What kind of doctor do I see for this? ...Visitor from CO
Answer:
I suspect that you have TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems. I would advise you to see a general dentist, specifically one who has extra training in neuromuscular treatment.
You can find an LVI (Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies) trained dentist at www.neuromuscular--dentist.com. Look for somebody who has had advanced training or call the office to see if he has had neuromuscular training.
I suspect that you are grinding your teeth at night. You could be totally unaware of this.
The dentist can evaluate your problems and help you with a plan for necessary treatment. He may recommend a hard night guard, NTI appliance, or orthotic. Whatever you need, I strongly suggest a good general dentist who is really interested in your situation as the place to start.
