Question:
Unlocking the Jaw: My daughter (26) had a procedure to unlock her jaw (it was locked for almost 2 weeks) and a splint was inserted to align the jaw.
She is now experiencing severe pain when she removes the splint. She cannot open her mouth enough to get a toothbrush inserted. Is this normal after such a procedure? ...Visitor from TX
Answer:
I would suggest that you get back with the person who did the procedure.
There are exercises to do to open the mouth as in inserting tongue depressors and increasing the number of these as you can insert more, but this should be done under the supervision of the person who is treating the condition.
Other things that are helpful can be massage by somebody trained in TMJ treatment or physical therapy by somebody trained in this. In Austin, our practice has access to these resources.
TheraBite also reportedly has an appliance that may be helpful.
Again, any of this should be with the advice of the person who is treating the patient since this is a complex area and you could do more damage than good without proper guidance.
Your daughter is pretty young for to be having so many problems and you do not want to make the situation worse. You may also seek a second opinion if the treating dentist doesn't have answers.
