Lock Jaw Ask The Dentist Ira Koeppel

Question:
16 days locked jaw: 2 weeks ago I joined a gym and started cycle (spin) classes.

After the first session I noticed I couldn't open my mouth fully. This lasted for about 5 days and then when I woke one morning it was fine again. But, when I went to the gym again the same thing happened and it has been locked now for 16 days.

What can I do or who can I see to fix this? About 2 years ago I was on a flight from Australia to USA and fell asleep for about 5 hours when I awoke it was locked and didn't get better for a week.

I am quite concerned as I can't eat properly, can't have a good yawn and if I need to go to a dentist they won't be able to see or treat me well enough. ...Visitor from PA

Answer:
It sounds like your disc within your joint is displaced, and is not allowing your jaw its full range of motion.

It is like getting something stuck in the hinge of a door, it does not allow it to move correctly.

I have found with patients like these if I could get them in the office I could TENS them with the Myotronics ultra low frequency TENS unit. This has worked in many cases allowing complete relaxation of the muscles that may be in spasm, due to the displaced disc.

Myotronics makes a take home device called the BNS-40 that I prescribe sometimes for patients to tens at home for as long as they can.

After the range of motion increases I can then take impressions to make them a orthotic to help posture their jaw in a more comfortable spot, to help the joint heal.
