Dental Bonding to Fix Loose Teeth?
Question:
Loose teeth caused by physical trauma: I was recently robbed and was kicked in the face.
My front lower 4 teeth have been loose for about 2 months now. My Dentist used crowning to support all the teeth so that they can grow back..but its still loose.
This is bad... I don't want any false teeth. What can I do? ...Visitor from Rustenburg, South Africa
Answer:
When teeth are traumatized in such a manner as intense physical contact many things can happen. The supporting bone can fracture and the teeth will be loose, this should be able to be seen in an x-ray but some times may not.
The teeth themselves can break and get loose, This may or may not be seen in an x-ray at the time of fracture, however will often appear later on in x-rays as a line and an area of darkness associated with it.
Also the periodontal ligament (the fibers which hold the teeth to the gums and bone) may have been bruised. This swelling will cause the teeth to move and sometimes appear to extrude and affect the bite.
The treatment of splinting the teeth is a good one for this and will allow any and all of the above reasons to correct itself if it can. The splint should be extended to a stable area. It may take some time for the problem to correct itself.
