FAQ:  Loose Teeth

Loose Wiggly Teeth Ask The Dentist John Purpura Question:
What to do about teeth that wiggle? My brother's two front adult teeth were loosened due to a water bottle that hit his mouth (the cap part).

There seems to be no apparent injury, and it seems to be intact....but the teeth wiggle. What is the best thing to do? ...Visitor from NY

Answer:
Your brother needs to see a dentist and have an x-ray to evaluate the teeth. For the teeth may be fractured, as well as the bone which holds them in.

If the bone is fractured, the treatment would be to splint the teeth to the neighboring teeth for added strength as the bone heals and firms up the teeth.

If the teeth are fractured in the root area, splinting will help as well and the teeth may need to have a root canal procedure if the fracture is large.
