FAQ:  Ludwig's Angina

Question:
I have a lump on my bottom of my jaw. I can feel it on the inside of my mouth and on the outside of my lower jaw. I have no tooth pain, just swelling initally and now and itching. It is sensitive when it is touched form the inside of the mouth but not outside (It is not an insect bite).

Can one have an abcess without tooth pain? My physician cannot see me until a week from now. Should I schedule an appointment with a dentist? ...Roberta in VA

Answer:
Roberta, you may be showing signs of Ludwig's Angina, which can be a serious infection that can enter your airway and neck spaces. Most infected teeth do not give much pain and they can be very serious.

You need to call a dentist or oral surgeon immediately and begin antibiotics (probably something strong like Duricef or Keflex) without further delay. Insist on having somebody qualified to treat such problems see you - immediately!!!!!!!!!
