FAQ:  Managing Cost

Managing Cost Ask The Dentist Mitch Pohl Question:
Hi, I have various problems with my teeth. I went to see a dentist and she described a list of things I need done to them. I don't have insurance and I want to know if this is a scam or what. On teeth 15 comp.Amal, teeth 12 simple compo. teeth 11 comp.compo teeth 21 comp compo teeth 28 normal extraction, teeth 38 comp. extraction, teeth 36 RCT, pin support amal crown, teeth 45 RCT, comp. amal, simple compo(B) teeth 46 comp.amal teeth 46 RCT pin support amal crown and gum T+.

Please can you explain to me what all these mean and are these treatments painful. I'm especially worried about the extraction of my teeth and are all of these necessary. Or can I do some of it only the most important ones? The only problem I have is that my tooth and the far back at the top bits of it fell out and the one below it at the back has bad decay.

Why can't I get a filling for the bad decayed one instead she wants to extract it. Now at the side of my teeth on the right side has two which have tiny cavities at the side these are teeth close to the back ones. She said I have a few tiny holes at the front of my teeth and I must fill them. Please help me and advise me as to what is best for me. ...Tamara in London, England UK

Answer:
Tamara, I understand your concern regarding the amount of work that you need and the cost. It would be difficult for me, based upon your descriptions, to verify the work that was prescribed. I would need to do a clinical exam and have xrays to properly evaluate your oral health requirements. However, you are correct in suggesting that the most immediate problems being tended to at first.

What I would recommend is that you go back to your dentist and have her break your treatment plan into phases. Determine what is most immediate, then medium term goals and then long term goals. This way you can budget your treatment accordingly. Finally, you can always go for a second opinion.
