Question:
Burning Mouth Syndrome: I have had burning mouth syndrome since I entered my late 30s. I have been to several specialists including an oral pathologist. No one can figure out what the cause is. Some say it is stress related. Others are unsure. It is constant!!!
Lately, it has been unbearable. The only time I get any relief is, of course, when I am sleeping. I don't know what to do anymore. I just turned 50 and am in the menopausal stage of my life. I am at my wits end with this! My lips burn, tongue burns, mouth burns and lips are always very dry. ... Visitor from FL
Answer:
A burning mouth has many possible cause hypotheses, yet no one has found a common cause.
It may be related to histamine release as in allergies or a fungal (yeast) infection. Some feel that it may have some neuropathic origins.
The best thing is to return to an oral pathologist and ask to try the different types of elixir which are available. Hopefully one will help. The treatment is often palliative, for a cure could only be performed if the direct cause is known.
