Question:
Paper Thin Teeth: The fronts of my upper teeth are bonded since 1997. Backs gone. Paper-thin and ready to snap. I didn't want anymore of remaining teeth taken away.
Is there a long term crown for these front teeth...without filing away remaining nail-thin teeth? Anything with gold underneath that will not show through? Are there also veneers for this situation on these teeth...with 2 sides?
Also, going to build up back lower teeth with gold onlays in teeth and ontop...is there a way to know I am getting the best gold? ... Visitor from IL
Answer:
It sounds like you need to hurry up and slow down! Before restoring any teeth it is imperative that you and your dentist have a complete understanding of how your mouth ended up in the present condition. In addition, the treatment options, and what will be done to prevent the same problems from recurring when your mouth is restored.
Did the wear come from grinding, clenching, bulemia or congenital developmental problems? The ideal treatment will vary in each of these conditions.
For instance, if the damage is caused by years of grinding, the vertical dimension may be reduced. In other words your jaw may be over closing. This can cause problems with your jaw joints. If your mouth is restored in that position additional tooth structure will need to be removed in order to restore the front teeth. The vertical dimension is determined by the height of your back teeth. This is not an arbitrary position.
In this example, failure to determine proper vertical dimension and jaw position will result in an unpredictable result.
Dentistry in one of the few areas in medicine where patients can have their body youthfully restored. There are many wonderful options available today. It is imperative that the dentist be trained in comprehensive rehabilitation in order for you to have proper function, phonetics and esthetic.
