Open Bite Ask The Dentist Mitchell Pohl Question:
I am 29 years old. I had fixed wire ortho treatment about 2 years back and after I only wear retainers at night. 2 upper and 2 lower teeths were removed for this treatment. Earlier the lower teeths had projected over upper teeth. Now the results are better. But still also my smile is not perfect, had teeths little bit projected.

I am not much bothered about my smile or face. But I had some problems, but I am afraid whether how I could describe this. I am not comfortable with joining(biting) the the teeths. I think I am overbiting(inner teeths) sometimes. My lower jaw and lower lips tend to open. But I usually close my mouth deliberately and bite the teeths usually(I think this not a relaxed position) But when I sleeps or, this tend to open. Upper and lower teeths are not joined together and mouth little bit opened.

I don't know whether this is a problem of teeths or its because of the shape of mouth itself. I think when I wear the braces, I don't have problem with biting. Is there any treatement for this? At times I am very much worried. My teeths slightly bigger, but my mouth is smaller. I think my case is some thing difficult. Can you help? ...Shaji in Wiesbaden, Germany

Answer:
Shaji, I read your inquiry, and although your English is better than my German, I will try and answer what I think your problem is. It seems from what you described, that you have an open bite in the front.

An open bite means that the front teeth do not touch. It also sounds like your lower front teeth overlap the upper front teeth. You say that you have already had orthodontics. If this is true then you should be evaluated for orthognathic surgery.

It seems that you have a skeletal discrepancy between your upper and lower jaws. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon could cut and reposition the bones to a normal relationship. I would try and find an oral surgeon in Germany that can do that. If not let me know, because there is an excellent one here. Hope I have helped.
