Question:
I wear braces and have had them for one year. I noticed yesterday that my lower gum area is very sore and tender. I also notice that my gums have darkened in some areas. There is a very tiny puss pocket between the extra flesh connected to my gum and lower lip. Could you tell me what this is and what home rememdies I can try until I see my dentist? ...Angela
Answer:
Angela, swelling of the gums could be attributed to a few things such as:
1) Poor oral hygiene - floss between that area and wiggle the bristles of the toothbrush and brush really well. Bleeding can occur if that area has not been cleaned for awhile. The bleeding should decrease over time.
2) If there is some pus coming out, have a check up with your general dentist to make sure there are no underlying cavities in that area.
Overall, point out your concern with your orthodontist.
