Question:
Do retainers cause cavities? I brush my teeth regularly and even more. I clean my retainers with Efferdent, and I rinse with antiseptic mouth wash. Yet I still have cavities on my back, lower teeth. How is this? I don't understand because I have always brushed my teeth and never had the first cavity until I got my braces off and started wearing retainers at night. ...Lauren
Answer:
Lauren, you might be doing the right thing about brushing, however, the shapes and irregularities of the teeth on the 'tongue' side of your mouth has 'pits' that you cannot see and sometimes the toothbrush cannot get into because they are too small.
The best thing to do would be to have regular 'cavity' check ups with your dentist. Hope this helps!
