Question:
I have always had a pretty bad overbite.
I have never had braces or anything to try and correct it. Are there any alternatives to braces?
I am 25 and would like to avoid braces if possible. ...Visitor from MA
Answer:
A severe overbite typically suggests jaw sizing disparities and/or the mismatching of the upper and lower arches of teeth. Expanders are sometimes effective although orthognathic surgery AND braces is the usual treatment.
All other "work arounds" that people experiment with in order to avoid braces quite often create unsatisfactory outcomes that may require retreatment at even more cost.
Reconstructive dentistry is possible but the cost to replace and reposition tooth structures can be very very expensive.
Consulting with 3 or 4 orthodontists would be beneficial in determining what the consensus of opinion is. Once that is achieved, select the orthodontist or dentist that can do the best job of providing treatment that meets your expectations for timeliness of treatment, duration, cosmetic and functional outcome and cost.
