Question:
Correcting Overbite without braces: I have good teeth but I have an overbite. I really do not want to get braces so what other options do I have? ...Visitor from PA
Answer:
Since I cannot evaluate your overbite on this dental site, I would want to know how
much Overjet you have (the distance from the top edges of your lower teeth to how far out your top teeth extend forward).
Also, how far down do your top teeth hang down over your bottom teeth? When you bite your teeth together and look into the mirror, how much of your bottom teeth do you see? A little bit? Not at
all?
The less of the bottom teeth you see, the deeper the bite. In fact, some dental malocclusion's are so
deep, that the persons bottom teeth touch or bite into the roof of the mouth!
If you have severe Overjet or an extremely deep bite orthodontics or possibly jaw advancement
surgery may be your best option to correct your malocclusion. Cosmetic dentistry could make the top
teeth look better but it would not solve the position problem between your top and bottom jaws.
Also, as you get older, the uneven biting force between the upper and lower jaws can lead to periodontal (gum) problems or stress to your TMJ's (the hinge joint directly in front of your ears).
