Overbite Dentistry Ask The Dentist James Sanderson Question:
I have a bad overbite on my top teeth. When I was 13 they removed two teeth on top and fitted me with a retainer but it did not work and I am now 37.

I have always been self conscious about my teeth and was wondering if I could have the six front teeth remaining pulled and get a partial for those teeth. ...Visitor from TN

Answer:
You ask a good question. I can tell you have been giving this some good thinking. I am not sure your thoughts about how to go about it is the best for you in the long term however.

Generally I would not want to remove any teeth if possible because you need the support that the root structure gives for function. That said...

I do have one case where we removed the front 4 teeth and that has been fine now for 15 years. We did bone grafts when we removed the teeth planning to do implants but the patient decided against the implants and we did a fixed bridge instead. The outcome is still fantastic.

Another question is do you possibly need to have some jaw surgery done to get the jaws lined up so that your face is in the right proportions? That may really be the problem. If that is the real problem and you have the teeth removed so that you can pull the top front teeth back then your face may look sunken in and you will look much older and you will have lost 6 teeth too...
