Question:
Pain and swelling: I recently had a root canal done on my right 2nd molar. It was previously crowned.
I have been telling dentists for probably 6 years that there was something wrong with the tooth, they could find nothing in tests. Finally the pain was more consistant and my dentist decided to do a root canal. He definitely found infection.
Since then I have swelling under the jaw and in my glands. I have more discomfort and burning than actual pain. I have been on two rounds of amoxicilin and 6 days of clindamycin. Swelling still exists.
The dentist doesn't have a clue what could be wrong and told me to wait a month or two and see what happens! WHAT ???? What is your suggestion. Where do I go from here? ...Visitor from NY
Answer:
Yes.... the "wait and see" isn't favored by most patients with a serious issue.
Obtain a consult or two with periodontists who have a cone beam ctscan. Those 3D imaging
devices can more easily reveal the possibility of infection that has become deeply seated into your jawbone... which is not uncommon, but can be difficult to treat.
This diagnostic talent isn't routinely shared by many dentists, especially those who do not have access to 3D imaging technologies.
Since periodontists are the "tissue specialists".... they are usually the best resource for treatment.
