Pain Gum and Mouth Ask The Dentist James Sanderson Question:
I had root canal work performed on two top back molars over 1 year ago. I never had the crowns put on due to being too busy and the cost even with insurance.

I have been picking the cavity of the root canal with one of those floss at one end plastic toothpick on the other end type devices. I just started doing this about 2 weeks ago as I noticed food was entering the cavity and I really don't remember it doing this before. I am not sure if I had a temporary covering or not..I just basically don't remember and the specialist was in another city 5 hours from where I am now and I don't even remember his name.

Yesterday I noticed a lump on the outside area of the gum that is directly in front of the what is left of my molar which had the root canal performed on it. It does not hurt me unless I apply pressure to it with my finger. It is kind of soft and I can feel that it is hotter there then the rest of my mouth when I put my tongue to it. It has gotten a bit bigger and it protrudes over the "tooth".

I rinsed with peroxide and brushed the area well but I am begining to realize that this situation is more then one I can remedy. I am afraid of being poisoned if it should burst. Can it? I have just been at a new job for 4 days and I don't know how to tell a new employer I think I have a gum infection and need to see a dentist.

I don't know if this would call for surgery or something and I have no insurance until Dec. 23rd of this year. I would love to put it off until then as there is no pain but..that is not to say something can occur from this like face swelling or blood poisoning or worse...is this possible? Please help me as I am afraid of what could happen ....is this an abcess? ...Visitor from TN

Answer:
I am sorry that you are having this trouble.

The trouble you are having was predictable however. Evidently it was suggested that you that you have the treatment completed with a crown and build up... I understand your procrastination due to financial and time difficulties but you are now living with the consequences.

Yes this can become more involved than you currently are experiencing. I have seen these things become very bad problems. I have also seen these things settle down some on their own. My bet is that you may have lost the tooth now because of further decay or infection that has happened.

If you choose to wait you are rolling the dice. If you were my sister I would want to see you in the morning.

My advice is to pay to have the treatment done that you need now and then use your insurance that starts later in the year to help you with further treatment. I bet you have more to be done.

Your mouth is the most intimate part of you and the way that you present yourself to the public. It is the way that you make your best first impression... It is extremely valuable to you and I hope for you that you can develop an appreciation for it before it is too late to enjoy it like it was designed to be enjoyed.

If you can find a dentist you can feel comfortable with and that you can trust to help you turn things around over an appropriate period of time then you may find that at 80 you indeed have something to be thankful for... You might start that process by calling the doctor who saw you last to see if they know someone in your area. And then see them and tell them your situation and ask them to help you get to the point where you are stable.... You may be pleasantly surprised that you meet someone who is able to guide you out of this problem successfully.

If you do not have someone you know to see you then you might look on this link and see if you can find someone close to you who can help you http://www.dental--health.com/dentistdirectory.html
