Question:
I had a root canal last year in July. I still had pain so the dentist advised me to have a apicoectomy which I had done in the following November - apicoectomy/periadicular anterior #6 and retrograde per root.
I still had severe pain and the oral surgeon extracted the tooth in December. I am still having pain in my gums, and it goes up into my sinuses. I did go back to the oral surgeon after several weeks and he can't understand why I was still having pain. At present the whole side of my face is painful. Should I go to an ENT physcian or back to the oral surgeon? ...Visitor from NY
Answer:
That depends upon your type and location of the pain. Tooth #6 is a canine(eye) tooth and should not have any effect or confusion with the sinuses. If the pain is dull and achey over the upper molar teeth then this could be seen by a general doctor or an ENT.
If the pain is sharp and electric like a tooth ache with a cavity, this type of pain especially when it is perstiant in the region of the extracted tooth can be a form of neuralgia. This type of pain is best managed by a pain specialist.
