Gum Pain Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Extractions don't stop bite pain: I keep getting teeth pulled, but when I do it just goes to another problem in my mouth.

I just had two back bottom teeth pulled. I also did have a blood clot in the two I got pulled but now I'm in more pain than ever. My jaw kills me now it starts in mouth then I just feel it go up past ear. I even feel a knot above my ear when it does.

I can't figure out what is wrong but the strangest part is that it starts around 6:00 pm every night and comes every 10 min. but not during day. I am tired of this and also running out of teeth for getting pulled thinking its all coming from them. Does anyone have any answers for me on this please. ...Visitor from TN

Answer:
You have a complex problem that may require you see several specialists. You may start with your dentist and have a consult with an endodontist to check to see if nerve pain is from infection in one or many teeth.

Perhaps you have an underlying infection, tumor, oral cancer, all of which need to be looked for. You may have temperomandibular joint dysfunction or tmj problems. You may have neurological problems like trigeminal neuralgia.

So after your general dentist and endodontist evaluate you perhaps an oral surgeon can assess you as well. Then you can see if a neurological consult or ENT consult is indicated.

I would encourage you to try and assess the origins of this pain before removing any other teeth. I do wish you luck.
