Question:
Painful foul smelling Molar gum tissue: For about 10 months now I have had gum pain with a foul discharge taste.
The gum around my top back molar has been swollen and painful to the point that I cannot chew on that side. I have been given 5 different antiobiotics over the past 9 months, Doxacycline, Keflex, Amoxicillin and something that began with a "C" for 2 refills and now on 2nd refill of Augmentin with no change.
My dentist keeps trying new antiobiotics but how long can I continue on antiobiotics with no change? What should my next course of action be? I am very frustrated. ...Visitor from PA
Answer:
To go on for 10 months with no resolution of your pain or symptoms is far too long. You did list a number of antibiotics that your dentist has tried, to no avail.
However you did not say anything about what treatment of referrals your dentist has provided. Did he refer you to a Periodontist (Gum Specialist), an Oral Surgeon or a regular M.D. to evaluate your chronic pain and swelling?
Has a Root Canal Specialist examined you to see if you have a chronic abscess in a molar tooth in the swollen area? If your dentist has not referred you for futher evaluation, I would recommend that you make an appointment yourself with a Periodontist or Oral Surgeon for a second opinion.
