Question:
Pain in Gums: I went to Costa Rica for 2 fillings. The dentist could not even out my bite (it took about 3 weeks to even out on its own).
Since then I have had pain in my gums around these 2 filled teeth. It has been about 2 and a half months since the procedure.
Could this lead to serious problems? I asked the dentist this question, but she would not give me an answer. ...Visitor from MD
Answer:
I will first advise you not to go outside the US for dental treatment. The US has the most highly advanced treatment in the world, and the University of Maryland has just opened what is probably the most current training facility in the country.
The problems you are having with your bite will probably not resolve themselves. You may feel better for a while, but bite problems may turn into lifelong grinding and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems.
By all means, run, don't walk, to a competent dentist in Maryland and have this checked out. The solution may be as easy as a bite adjustment or night time splint. The longer it isn't solved, the more complex and expensive and painful it is to resolve.
My advice is to find a dentist you trust and can work with near you and never go outside the country for dental treatment again.
If you need help in finding a local dentist, look for somebody who is a fellow or master of the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD, MAGD). These are practitioners who are involved in continuing education and keep up with new developments. Hope this helps.
