Question:
Bone Graft for a Maxillary Partial? I've been having problems with my bridge.
My dentist wants to put in an implant but it's very costly.
The other alternative is a partial but he says that he has to do a bone replacement graft first.
I got a second opinion from another dentist who says a bone replacement graft is not necessary for a partial. I am confused. ..Visitor from FL
Answer:
Your questions are a little confusing.
First, bone grafting is almost never needed to make a partial. Unless you have had cancer, cleft palate etc., bone grafting isn't needed. It would only be needed if an imminent fracture was feared.
You say you have a bridge on top. What is wrong with it? Why does your dentist want to put in an implant?
If you don't have enough teeth to hold an upper partial, one (1) implant wouldn't be enough to hold an entire partial. If cost is a consideration, an upper partial without bone grafting is probably the least expensive of your options.
