Question:
Our old pediatrician has had our kids on flouride since I think 2 years old. We have a whole house carbon filter, water softner, and a 4 filter Culligan reverse osmosis system which, we were told removes all flouride. The old pediatrician prescribed, for our now 4 an 6 year olds, .5mg of sodium flouride drops once a day.
Our new pediatrician said to reduce it to .25mg for both children. Our dentist is indifferent as to whether or not to give flouride supplements. I recently heard that flouride is overrated and can have health risks. What is your recommendation? ...Chrystal in CA
Answer:
Since your kids do not have interproximal decay (cavities that are in-between the teeth) and do not have a lot of cavities, you probably do not need to continue the drops. Also, with your filter system, bring a sample to your dentist and have them test to see how much, if any, fluoride is in the water. Fluoride is good and will not have any ill-effect.
