Question:
Receding Gums: I am in my mid fifties and have worn upper dentures since the age of 28.
I have tried to get new dentures four times since my initial set but the dentists make my teeth look like I have a serious overbite. They are not flattering nor do they enhance my appearance.
I am still wearing this old, grinded down and yellow set.. but they look horrible. My gums have receded alot over the years. It looks like my mouth is sinking in.
Is there anything I can do to get dentures after the gum has receded? My lower gums have receded so much that they are real skinny and I have only 2 natural teeth and 4 crowns left. What can be done for my upper and lower receding gums? ... Visitor from IN
Answer:
You didn't mention where your teeth are but I will assume they are all on the lowers - hence your overbite.
If you have receeded bone and skin on the top, a dentist can build out the dentures to recapture the original tooth and lip position but if your teeth on the bottom are far back - it either means you had a severe overbite when you had all of your teeth or you haven't had the lip support for so many years and your lips won't allow the placement of the denture teeth to ideal anymore.
All I can tell you is that you would need to be evaluated in person to assess your situation. You can find skilled prosthodontists in your area but they need to be aware of all your failures.
Take with you all 4 dentures so they can see if they can do something differently than what has been done in the past. Dentists can put teeth where they are esthetic but we must make sure you can tolerate this change.
In fact there are times where a few dentures need to be made to gradually move the lower jaw to a new position over a period of time.
