Question:
Permanent Retainer: My orthodontist told me I can't get a permanent retainer on my lower teeth because one of my teeth is a crown.
Is that true or should I try another orthodontist? ... Visitor from NY
Answer:
No, this is not true.
Your crown is made of porcelain. We are able to cement directly to porcelain by etching with a
special chemical and then applying a special liquid called silane coupling agent.
Once the silane is applied, the tooth can then be cemented in exactly the fashion we would cement braces or a bonded retainer to a natural tooth.
If the crown is prepared properly, the bond will be as strong as the bond to your natural teeth. I would suggest contacting a reputable orthodontist in your area to have a permanent retainer placed.
