Frequent Teeth Whitening - Is it Safe?

One of our editors was recently asked by Real Simple Magazine, part of Time Incorporated, to address two consumer oriented questions involving teeth whitening products and their usage.

Question #1:
One reader says she bleaches her teeth every few months to maintain a natural shade of white. Is it safe to bleach teeth that often? Or does it depend on the person?

Question #2:
Our second reader says that she uses a whitening product from her dentist on her teeth once a month for a white smile. Is it safe for her to use the product that often?

Answer:
Both questions really are related.

The Wall Street Journal published an article on teeth bleaching which attests, at the consumer level of information, to the safety of most tooth bleaching products. Most products whether they be whitening toothpastes, over the counter products, or professionally dispensed whitening agents contain varying concentrations of carbamide peroxide.

The chemistry is safe in all of these and has been scrutinized by all interested parties.

A patient can not over bleach their teeth. By repeated applications of different products, they can however achieve a result that is so white as to look artificial. Otherwise, there is no downside to maintaining a gleaming white, friendly smile.
