Oral Conscious IV General Sedation FAQ Ask The Dentist Ron Briglia Question:
Novacaine: I really hate the feeling of being numb but know it is necessary for the procedure I need to have done.

My question: Is there anything to help reverse or speed up the the wearing off of the novacaine? ...Visitor from PA

Answer:
There is a way for your dentist to use a short acting, epinepherine free local anesthetic which wears off much faster than one that contains epinepherine.

How epinepherine prolongs the effects of the anesthetic is that it constricts the blood vessles around the tooth being numbed so that the blood stream cannot dilute or carry the medicine away as fast.

Another effect of epinepherine is that it increases the heart-rate for a minute or two after the injection is given.
