Question:
I have been trying to find out how long birth control pills are ineffective after having an I.V. sedation. I got my wisdom teeth removed a
week ago and someone told me it was a month until the birth control pills
began to be effective again.
I just wanted to know if it was right or not. Please let me know. Thank you for ALL of your help!!
Answer:
It is my understanding and recommendation to my patients that they use another means of birth control other than the pill while taking antibiotics or other meds that can affect the enzymes in the liver. Usually this is only needed until the 1/2 life of the medication is passed.
Most sedation meds have at the outside, a 2 day 1/2 life and so one could assume that your birth control pill should work as planned after 2 or 3 days safely. Overall, the real risks of getting pregnant due to
ineffective oral contraceptives is fairly low and near the risk of getting pregnant with the pill normally.
